Geekerific
March 6th, 2007 | by Paolo |My friend Michelle Nijhuis (award-winning journalist and all-around cool person) went to the AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science, for those of you who don’t know… I didn’t) Annual Meeting out in San Francisco this year. Major science geekfest.
She passed on a couple choice quotes that seem to sum up the overall feel of the event.
“You see Vidar over there, the guy in the red flannel? Well, he’s the guy who came up with a way to measure the biomass of Alaskan pollock, but you’d never know it. He’s SO modest about it.”
And from a scientific meeting:
“As you watch this next video of the red deer mating call, please try to ignore the other mating behavior he does, this odd penis pumping action. We’re more interested in the descent of his larynx.â€
Geek out.

(Sorry if this comment appears twice; it didn’t appear the first time I tried posting.)
I’ll bet that second quote refers to the research described in this PDF, which I found as a result of this discussion.

Hi Ted,
WordPress’ spam grabber went after your post. I think because it had outside links in it. :-( I’ll try to do a better job of watching what falls into the spam-bucket. Anyway, thanks for the links.
